Antique Chinese Carved Camphor Chest Description

This beautiful antique Chinese carved camphor chest has ornate carving on all sides besides the back panel. The carvings on the sides cleverly disguise recessed carrying handles. It stands on square cut bracket feet and is protected and strengthened by brass corner and edge trimming. An engraved brass locking hasp, original brass padlock and key along with the original moveable tray complete the piece.

The strong scent of the camphor wood upon opening the lid provides the clue to the original purpose of the chest. The aroma repelled insects which might have damaged clothing or other material items stored in it. Authentic camphor chests with this quality of hand carving and brass binding, with the original lock and key, are few and far between. This stunning chest can simply be displayed for its intrinsic beauty in a prominent place where it can be appreciated by all or it can easily be put to functional use as a coffee table by covering the top with a piece of glass to protect the carving.
